COURSEWORK: Roger Martinez Brings PGA to Albuquerque
The stakes were high for Roger Martinez. “I was five years old,” he remembers, “playing in the ‘Little Fellers’’ division of the Ascarate Municipal Golf Course Junior Tournament in El Paso.” On the 9th. hole, Roger had a 30-footer to shoot 70 for nine holes. “I asked my Grandpa how much the putt was worth if I made it. He had $3. I made it, and Grandpa gave me his last three bucks.” This year, the stakes were a little higher for Roger Martinez, as he brought the 42nd. PGA Professional National Championship to New Mexico.
The event, which took place June 28th. through July 1st. of this year,was held at two award winning courses, Santa Ana Golf Club and Twin Warriors Golf Club, both in Santa Ana Pueblo near Albuquerque. (continue article)
Erin Trujeque Memorial Tournament
Eventhough he was just a kid, he loved the game. But at age 11, just after competing in a junior golf tournament, Erin Trujeque was diagnosed with cancer. In the year that followed, Erin received treatment in the University of New Mexico Pediatric Oncology Program. After each often painful or uncomfortable treatment, he would receive “Bravery Bucks” -- $2 to $3 checks -- which he used in shopping trips after each clinic visit.
While Erin was surrounded with loved ones and friends, he quickly befriended other children, many of whom were far from home and family. So when friends approached him about hosting a golf tournament to raise money to help, Erin was enthusiastic--”but only if it’s for all the kids.” (continue article)
